Enrollment now open for dairy farmers' risk management program
USAgNet - 02/28/2024

The American Farm Bureau Federation is calling on dairy producers to sign up for the Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC) program, a pivotal risk management tool designed to support them in times of low milk prices or high feed costs.

This program, administered by the Department of Agriculture, allows dairy farmers to select coverage levels that best suit their operations, ranging from $4 to $9.50 per hundredweight, and to decide on the percentage of their historical production to cover.

The enrollment window for the 2024 DMC program has officially opened, following a delay attributed to software updates and the need for new rule publications regarding production histories. Despite the postponement, the program promises retroactive coverage and payments for those who enroll promptly, with a deadline set for April 29.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to provide dairy producers with the tools they need to navigate the volatile agricultural market. Beyond the DMC, there are calls for more significant changes to the dairy payment system to further support farmers.

This includes a proposal for the emergency implementation of a new payment formula to address recent losses experienced by dairy producers due to policy changes. Such measures underscore the ongoing commitment to ensuring the stability and profitability of the dairy farming sector.

The Dairy Margin Coverage program represents a critical resource for dairy farmers aiming to mitigate the risks associated with their livelihoods. By participating in DMC, producers can gain a level of security, allowing them to continue feeding America while managing the financial uncertainties of farming.
