USDA approves D-SNAP for hurricane-hit Florida
USAgNet - 09/22/2023

The aftermath of Hurricane Idalia left many Florida residents grappling with its devastating effects. In response, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has stepped up by unveiling the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) for 11 affected Florida counties. This initiative, specifically tailored for those impacted by the hurricane, aims to ensure they have enough to eat.

Though the usual Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has specific eligibility criteria, D-SNAP offers a broader scope. As Tom Vilsack highlighted, around 233,000 households might benefit from D-SNAP. To qualify, households must reside or work within the disaster zone and meet certain other criteria.

Florida plans to roll out its D-SNAP application from September 22 to October 14, 2023. During this period, eligible families can obtain a month's worth of benefits equivalent to the maximum SNAP amount for their household size. These funds can be used at authorized SNAP stores or select online retailers.

Besides D-SNAP, current SNAP beneficiaries in the 11 counties will also receive supplemental benefits, ensuring they get the maximum allocation for their family size.

The USDA's commitment to aiding Florida in these trying times extends beyond just D-SNAP. The department has approved multiple waivers to facilitate hot food purchases and compensate for food lost due to power outages.
