State Veterinarian for Ohio Dr. Forshey Passes Away

The Department of Agriculture announced the passing of State Veterinarian Dr. Tony Forshey.

Director Dorothy Pelanda said in a statement, "Dr. Forshey had a passion and commitment to agriculture and animal health. He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from The Ohio State University and practiced veterinary medicine for 27 years, with a major interest in swine production. He served as the State Veterinarian and Chief of Animal Health at ODA for 15 years. Dr. Forshey held numerous leadership roles at the national level, serving on the Board of Directors for the United States Animal Health Association and Chairman of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the National Institute for Animal Agriculture.

"It was a privilege to know Dr. Forshey. He left a lasting mark on the Ohio Department of Agriculture, our state, and our nation."

Gov. Mike Dewine said in a Tweet, "Fran and I were saddened to learn of the death of Ohio's longtime state veterinarian, Dr. Tony Forshey. He was nationally respected for his work in veterinary medicine and loved by his @OhioDeptofAg colleagues. Our thoughts are with his wife and his entire family."

Forshey served on several major swine health manufacturer advisory boards including Elanco Animal Health, Pfizer Animal Health, Newport Laboratories and Schering Plough.

His honors and awards include: the National Institute for Animal Agriculture's Chairman's Award (2012); the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association's Veterinarian of the Year Award (2010); Ohio Pork Producers Council Service Award for Outstanding Service to the Ohio Swine Industry (1998); the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association's Meritorious Award for service to the Ohio Swine Industry(1997); the Outstanding Alumnus Award, Shenandoah High School, Sarahsville, Ohio (1996); Who's Who in American Society and Business Citation (1992); and the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award, The Ohio State University, College of Veterinary Medicine (1987).
