State Fire Marshal: Be Safe This Weekend
Ohio Ag Connection - 05/27/2016

With the warmer weather approaching and Memorial Day weekend right around the corner, State Fire Marshal Larry L. Flowers wants to remind Ohioans to be fire safe during the summer months. Many fires are preventable and residents can reduce their risks of becoming a fire casualty by identifying potential hazards and following simple safety tips.

"Once the colder weather is behind us, it's nice to get outside and enjoy all that nature has to offer," said Marshal Flowers. "However, as you are camping, grilling or taking part in other activities, it's important to do so with some precaution. By remembering and practicing some simple safety guidelines, you may save your life or that of your family."

Marshal Flowers and the U.S. Fire Administration offer these tips:

Grilling Safety:

-- All propane and charcoal barbecue grills must be used outdoors to avoid fire hazards and toxic gases such as carbon monoxide.

-- Keep grills clear from overhanging branches, house siding and deck edges and railings. Also, position the grill far from foot traffic.

-- Before using a grill, check the connection between the propane tank and the fuel line.

-- Remove grease or fat buildup in the tray(s) below the grill to avoid a fire.

-- Wear well-fitted clothing when barbecuing. Loose articles and flammable material, such as nylon, should be avoided.

-- Supervise children around outdoor grills. Employ a three-foot "safety zone" around the grill and keep both children and pets at a distance.

Campfire Safety:

-- Build campfires where they will not spread, away from dry grass, leaves and overhanging tree branches.

-- Keep campfires small, and don't let them get out of hand.

-- Keep plenty of water and a shovel close by to douse the fire when you're done. Stir it and douse it again with water.

-- Never leave campfires unattended.

-- It is important to follow the park's rules for the use and extinguishing of campfires.

Additional Tips

-- If the power goes out, make certain that all electrical appliances, such as stoves, electric space heaters and hair dryers, are in the OFF position.

-- Test your smoke alarms at least once every month.

-- Some smoke alarms may be dependent on your home's electrical service and could be inoperative during a power outage. Check to see if your smoke alarm uses a back-up battery and install a new battery at least twice a year.

-- Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of your home and inside and outside of sleeping areas.
