Ohio Releases Final Lake Erie Coastal Erosion Maps
Ohio Ag Connection - 01/15/2019

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) released the final version of the Lake Erie Coastal Erosion Area maps. The 2018 Final Coastal Erosion Area Maps will now be used to determine if a property along Ohio's Lake Erie coast is located within a designated Coastal Erosion Area (CEA). The maps replace the 2010 Final Coastal Erosion Area Maps.

Under Ohio's Coastal Management law, ODNR is required to measure coastal erosion rates along the state's Lake Erie shore. A CEA is a designated area of land predicted to erode within a 30-year period if effective erosion control measures are not present. The objective of the CEA program is to identify the hazards and mitigate the economic losses of erosion-related damage.

The 2018 maps and associated data tables can be viewed online using the ODNR Division of Geological Survey's interactive CEA map viewer. Paper copies of the maps are also available to view at designated public viewing locations. To view the maps online, locate a public viewing location or learn more about CEA designations and mapping, visit coastal.ohiodnr.gov/ceamaps.

Property owners considering selling property or a construction project on Ohio's coast may visit the ODNR Office of Coastal Management's website at coastal.ohiodnr.gov or call 419-626-7980 to learn more. Staff will assist landowners in determining if a property is within a designated 2018 CEA. The ODNR Office of Coastal Management can also guide property owners through the permitting process.
