ODNR Offers Variety of September Activities

As the days get cooler, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) has multiple family-friendly activities throughout September for Ohioans to enjoy the state's natural beauty.

-- Labor Day Weekend at Ohio State Parks -- Get outside and celebrate the last days of summer with a bang! Many Ohio State Parks have exciting events planned for the Labor Day weekend. For more information, check out ODNR's calendar of events at parks.ohiodnr.gov/calendar.

-- Fall Festivals at Ohio State Parks -- As the leaves begin to turn, Ohio's State Parks will be offering fun fall activities for the whole family. From arts and crafts to hayrides and children's games, there is something fun for everyone. For more information, check out ODNR's calendar of events at parks.ohiodnr.gov/calendar.

-- Halloween Campouts at Ohio State Parks -- Join Ohio's state parks in celebrating some spooky fun! Crafts, parades and trick-or-treat events will be held at many parks during the end of September.

-- Catfish Derby at Lake Loramie State Park -- This free fishing competition will take place on Saturday, Sept. 3, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and is open to kids 17 and under. Participants can meet at the beach parking lot on State Route 362 for a fun-filled morning. For more information, call 937-295-2011.

-- Pioneer Village Comes Alive at Beaver Creek State Park -- On Saturday, Sept. 3, watch as this village comes to life. Volunteers, dressed in period clothing, will offer a variety of fun family activities including a wheat and corn grinding demonstration in the newly refurbished Gaston's Mill. All activities are handicap-accessible and free to the public. The event will take place from 12-3 p.m. For more information, call 330-385-3091.

-- Ring of Fire at Indian Lake State Park -- Celebrate one of Indian Lake's oldest traditions on Sunday, Sept. 4. Dating back to 1961, this dramatic event signals the changing of seasons with flares around the 5,800-acre lake to create a glowing "ring of fire." Flares are on sale at different businesses around the lake. For more information, call 937-843-2717

-- Invasive Species Control at Springville Marsh State Nature Preserve -- Volunteer on Wednesday, Sept. 7, from 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. to take care of the largest inland wetland in northwest Ohio. Volunteers should bring lunch, water, waterproof boots, gloves and mosquito repellant for this activity. For more information or to register, email info@onapa.org.

-- Wild Edible Weekend at Shawnee State Park -- Join botanists and naturalists for a weekend of hiking, foraging and munching through the woods and meadows. Taking place Sept. 9-11, this event will have something for everyone, including indoor programs and hikes. Enjoy an earth-to-table meal on Saturday on the Ohio River. The registration fee is $40, and 80 spots are available. Participants are welcome to camp at Shawnee State Park, book a room at the lodge or commute to the conference each day. -- Power Boating Basics at East Harbor State Park -- Take part in hands-on instruction on the basics of power boating on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Participants must be 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license to complete the land-based trailer portion of the course. The minimum age of participants is 12. Students ages 12-17 must be accompanied by an adult. All participants must have successfully completed a NASBLA-approved boater education course. -- Big Hike at Boch Hollow State Nature Preserve -- Guests are invited to stretch their legs during a beautiful 6-mile hike of Boch Hollow on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. Traverse hills covered in forests, see fascinating rock features and wander through dry meadow habitats. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes, bring water and a snack. Meet at Boch Hollow office, 7211 Bremen Road, Logan, Ohio. -- Campbell Ramble: Botany and Butterflies at Campbell State Nature Preserve -- Visitors are welcome to take part in this hike on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 1-3 p.m. Meet at the Crissey Road lot to start this adventure into high quality habitats, including a wet sedge meadow, swamp forest, sand dunes and sand barren prairie. -- Night Sounds: Bugs, Birds and Bats at Boch Hollow State Nature Preserve -- Listen closely to the mysterious nighttime noises of nocturnal creatures during these warm, end-of-summer nights on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Play games to find out which creatures are making the different sounds and why. The event will be held indoors in the event of rain. Meet at Boch Hollow office, 7211 Bremen Road, Logan, Ohio. For more information, call 740-380-8918.

-- Civil War Re-enactment at Beaver Creek State Park -- Take a trip into the past Sept. 10-11, with events held Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Visit encampments, talk with re-enactors and witness historical battles, with one on Saturday at 2 p.m. and the other taking place Sunday at 1 p.m. Other activities will include a Saturday evening Civil War ball and Sunday church service. -- Frontier Days at Cowan Lake State Park -- Visitors are welcome to experience the Frontier Days Celebration Sept. 16-17. Join ODNR staff for a pioneer paddle, atlatl throws, a cider press and more. For more information, call 937-382-1096 or visit the state park's Facebook page.

-- Catfish Tournament at A.W. Marion State Park -- Take part in this exciting catfish tournament on Saturday, Sept. 17. For more information, call 740-869-3124.

-- Coastweeks Clean Up and Adopt-a-Beach at Maumee Bay State Park -- Help keep Laker Erie beaches clean on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Meet at the nature center at 9:30 a.m. for volunteer sign-up, and be sure to pre-register by calling 419-836-9117 to ensure enough equipment is available. Lunch will be provided after the event.

-- Clambake at Mosquito Lake State Park -- Take part in this delicious clambake on Saturday, Sept 17, from 1-5 p.m. Hosted at the Mosquito Lake Marina, advance tickets are required. For more information, visit mosquitolakemarina.com or call 330-637-2075.

-- Grand Lake Marathon at Grand Lake St. Marys State Park -- Get ready, set and run on Saturday, Sept. 24, at this beautiful course around Grand Lake St. Marys State Park. A marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K will be offered for runners of all experience levels. For more information, visit grandlakemarathon.com.

-- Great Outdoor Weekend at Little Miami State Park -- Dive into this weekend-long program for canoeing and kayaking Sept. 24-25. Other activities will include stream quality monitoring, naturalist programs and more. Meet at the Carl Rahe access near Fosters to participate. -- Ohio Heritage Days at Malabar Farm State Park -- Enjoy Ohio's old-fashioned traditions Sept. 24-25, starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Crafts, primitives, antiques, horses, food, live music, a Civil War and living history camp and archaeological displays will be available during the event. -- Those Magnificent Monarchs Event at Chaparral Prairie State Nature Preserve -- On Saturday, Sept. 24, spend the day learning about monarch butterflies, beginning with an indoor presentation on monarchs, and ending with an outdoor catch and release event to tag butterflies. The event will take place from 2-4 p.m. Participants should dress in layers. For more information, call 740-858-6652.

-- Fall Equinox at Stage's Pond State Nature Preserve -- ODNR staff invite the public to observe the autumnal equinox on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 6-9 p.m. Guests can meet at the park office parking lot.
