Ohio August Crop Forecasts Up from 2019

Production forecasts for corn, soybeans, oats, and winter wheat are higher compared to last year's wetter than usual growing season, according to Cheryl Turner, state statistician, USDA NASS, Ohio Field Office. The soybean yield would be a record high, if realized while corn yield and production would be the 4th highest on record, if realized. April to May had cooler and wetter than normal conditions which were followed by hotter, drier weather from June through July throughout the State.
Highlights of the August 1 Crop Production report follow:
- Ohio's average corn yield is forecast at 175 bushels per acre, 11 bushels above last year. Total production is forecast at 595 million bushels, up 41 percent from last year.
- Soybean yield is forecast at 58 bushels per acre, up 9 bushels from last year. Total production is forecast at 277 million bushels, up 33 percent from last year.
- Winter Wheat is estimated at 71 bushels per acre, up 15 bushels from last year. Total production is forecast at 34.1 million bushels.
- Ohio's oat yield is forecast at 61 bushels per acre, 15 bushels above last year. Total production is forecast at 1.53 million bushels.
- Hay producers expect to harvest 320,000 acres of alfalfa hay with an average yield of 2.80 tons per acre. Total production is forecast at 896,000 tons. All other hay for harvest is expected to total 580,000 acres with an average yield of 1.80 tons per acre. Total production is forecast at 1.04 million tons.
