The Ohio State University is leading a multi-institutional engineering research center to develop and deploy revolutionary, intelligent autonomous manufacturing systems and educate a future manufacturing workforce.

This week, the National Science Foundation announced funding for the Hybrid Autonomous Manufacturing, Moving from Evolution to Revolution (HAMMER) Engineering Research Center, for five years at $26 million with the ability to renew for another $26 million for an additional five years. If fully realized, it will be one of the largest research investments in the last decade for Ohio State.

Leaders at the federal, state and local level are hailing the investment and the opportunity the new research center presents.

"Research in science and technology is critical for creating jobs and improving our economy. We unleash more American innovation when everyone is able to participate and we nurture all Ohio talent. The Ohio State University is one of Ohio's great institutions of higher education. These awards will help advance our knowledge and continue Ohio's leadership in innovation," said U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown.

"Congratulations to The Ohio State University and its Engineering Research Center for receiving a $26 million grant from the National Science Foundation. This funding will help to improve America's global competitiveness in advanced manufacturing and ease supply chain issues," added Senator Rob Portman.

"I am proud to have voted to pass record funding for the National Science Foundation, which made this grant possible. It will be exciting to see the next generation of American innovation pioneered right here at The Ohio State University, and I look forward to furthering our shared goal of building a diverse pipeline of qualified STEM professionals in central Ohio," noted U.S. Rep. and Congressional Black Caucus Chair Joyce Beatty (OH-03).

"Ohio State is a national leader in preparing students for the workforce and with this funding, the university will lead once again in developing next-generation hybrid autonomous manufacturing technologies and diversifying the manufacturing talent pipeline. HAMMER will advance American manufacturing and expand our capabilities to meet supply chain demands at a time when we desperately need it. Congratulations to Ohio State, and I look forward to seeing this project's completion," said U.S. Rep. Mike Carey (OH-15).

"As evidenced throughout history, there is no better place for innovators than Ohio, and the launch of HAMMER will further bolster Ohio's position as a global manufacturing powerhouse. The importance of advanced manufacturing on American soil has never been more important than it is today, and Ohio continues to be the go-to destination for research and development opportunities," said Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine.

"As new opportunities come to Ohio, technology and technical job skills are becoming more important for our economic future, particularly in advanced manufacturing and robotics. This investment will boost OSU's efforts to train and upskill the workforce needed to support the next generation of autonomous manufacturing so that Ohio can compete and win in this industry," noted Lt. Gov. Jon Husted, who leads InnovateOhio and the Governor's Office of Workforce Transformation.

"As global advanced manufacturing rapidly transitions to more reliance on robotics, sensors and artificial intelligence, Ohio is laying the foundation to generate the talent for these in-demand jobs. The NSF's historic grant to Ohio State is one of its largest ever, which will further build Ohio's talent pipeline as we welcome more investment in manufacturing efficiencies for semiconductors, electric and autonomous transportation, bioscience and much more," said J.P. Nauseef, JobsOhio president and CEO.

"For decades, NSF Engineering Research Centers have transformed technologies and fostered innovations in the United States through bold research, collaborative partnerships, and a deep commitment to inclusion and broadening participation. The new NSF centers will continue the legacy of impacts that improve lives across the nation," added National Science Foundation Director Sethuraman Panchanathan.

"One strength of NSF Engineering Research Centers is their ability to bring interdisciplinary academic teams together in convergent research to identify novel approaches to thorny societal challenges. With their unique testbeds and industry partners, the centers innovate and translate solutions that are effective and sustainable," said Susan Margulies, NSF Assistant Director for Engineering.
